The Pigmentation And Vascular Laser Treatments we Offer

Lifestyle, age and hormonal changes can affect the distribution of colour (melanin) in our skin, leading to the appearance of hyper pigmentation such as sun spots, age spots, or melasma .

Harmony IPL and laser treatment address the following examples and more:

Brown age spots (also called liver spots or solar lentigines) are pigment accumulations in the upper layer of the skin due to sun exposure.  They generally occur on the face, neck, chest and back as well as the forearms and hands.

Freckles (epithedlides) are small spots of concentrated pigment stimulated by the sun that remain in stable locations on sun exposed areas.

Melasma causes brown to grey-brown patches.  Generally occurring on the face, on the bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. It also can appear on other parts of the body that get lots of sun, such as the forearms and neck.

Cafe-au-lait spots are the light brown colour of milky coffee; they can be small or large and appear on any part of the body.

Hyperpigmentation and Dyschromia are an alteration of colour or excessive pigmentation of the skin.

Rosacea – a condition in which certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance.

Facial thread veins and nevi (telangiectasia) small superficial red, purple or blue veins often occurring around the nose and cheeks.

How Do Laser Pigment And Vascular Treatments Work?

Treatments for both pigment and vascular lesions are delivered in a short flash of laser light. As the laser light pulse impacts onto the skins surface, Harmony Pro XL light-based and laser treatments remove the appearance of pigment spots by targeting the melanin in the darkened area, clearing pigmentation and revealing more even toned, unblemished skin.

Laser light is absorbed by the pigment melanin, where it is converted to heat, causing the darkened area to break up and flake off.  Because only the darker area is precisely targeted, the surrounding areas are not harmed.

How Long Do Laser Pigment and Vascular Treatments Take?

The procedure usually takes 10 – 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. You will wear a pair of black out goggles.  Cooling gel will be applied prior to the treatment.

Are Laser Pigmentation and Vascular Treatments Painful?

The sensation is similar to the snap of a thin rubber band onto the skin. The procedure produces mild discomfort in a short burst. Immediately following the treatment, the pigment or vessel will be darkened, and mild redness (erythema) and mild swelling (oeodema) is usually evident for several hours. It feels similar to a small spot of sunburn and usually does not interfere with daily activities. There is usually no blistering or bruising.

How Quickly Will I See a Result?

Pigmented lesions ( e.g. age spots or sun spots)  will darken initially, usually for approximately 7-14 days and then flake off.

Vascular lesions (e.g. thread veins)  will fade gradually over 2 – 10 weeks.

The number of treatments you will need will depend upon the area being treated and the condition of your skin. A series of 2 – 6 treatments at intervals of 2 – 3 weeks apart are usually recommended and you will generally notice an improvement in 10 – 28 days.

Wear sunscreen of at least SPF30.
Darker skins types IV-VI have a higher risk of hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin complexion). A full consultation and patch test are required 1 week before treatment.
