More information on the entire procedure below. HIFU is also known as Ultherapy, or Ultrasound.

How long do HIFU results last?

Most people find results last around 1-2 years, although some people do report longer lasting results of 3+ years. Consultations throughout the year are recommended. HIFU Ultrasound Face and Neck Lift can be used in conjunction with other anti ageing treatments.

Who is HIFU for?

People who have noticed that the skin on their face or neck has become more lax and who wish to lift and tighten the relevant area. People in their 40’s and 50’s are the most common age group who have this treatment. It is also suitable for those aged 60+ as long as the degree of laxity is not too severe. HIFU is also a good maintenance for people who have had surgery in the past and want to prolong the effects of a surgical facelift.  For people in their 30’s it is typically used to stimulate collagen production and help delay the ageing process. HIFU Ultrasound Face and Neck Lift can be used in conjunction with other anti ageing treatments at Avalon Medipsa. A full consultation is always completed at least 24 hours before every treatment.  All consultations are free at Avalon Medispa, please contact us for more info.

What is HIFU Ultrasound Face and Neck Lift and Tightening?

HIFU is a face lifting and neck tightening technology that is revolutionary because of its use of focused ultrasound that creates tiny heat spots underneath the SMAS and deep subcutaneous tissue. Lines of these tiny spots delivered at varying degrees, will create a vector of pull or lift. The ultrasound energy can stimulate the body’s natural healing response and cause collagen production to create a tightening affect over approximately 3+ months; results last around 2 years.

Tissue laxity is largely the result of structural weakening in the skin’s foundation (SMAS and Platysma muscles) at approximately 4.5mm deep. The Sub Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) is a layer of strong connective tissue that envelops the face and connects to the platysma muscle in the neck. Prior to high intensity focused ultrasound treatments, this layer was only accessible during a surgical facelift.  The revolutionary HIFU energy triggers a natural response under the skin, jump starting the regenerative process that produces fresh, new stronger collagen over the next 3 months plus. As the collagen building process continues, improvements can appear for up to a following 6 – 9 months and results last around 2 years.

Does the HIFU treatment have any downtime?

Ultrasonic waves and heat bypass the surface of the skin to deliver targeted energy specifically into the deep structural tissues. Most people do not report pain and can carry on as normal immediately after. There can be slight aching over bony areas or redness and a warm sensation in the skin during treatment. These generally dissipate as soon as the treatment has ended. There may be slight redness for some following the treatment. Rarely, a small amount of patients report swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch for a day or so. Full after care advice will be given at your appointment.

Is HIFU safe?

Ultrasound energy has been used safely in the field of medicine for more than 50 years. Thousands of treatments have been performed worldwide using HIFU technology without significant adverse events.

Is HIFU Painful?

HIFU is one of the most innovative medical device technologies currently available for lifting the face, neck, and brow region. It can be painful depending on the settings used, area being treated, number of lines being laid down and pain tolerance of the patient. HIFU therapy involves penetrating ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production in the deeper dermal and sub-dermal levels; resulting in micro injury to that tissue. As the tissue heals, it increases collagen and the collagen fibres organise and shorten. A tightening effect is seen on the tissue. There can be some discomfort when the ultrasound energy is being applied but it is temporary, and a good sign that the collagen-building process has begun.

All areas of the face are not equal in terms of pain sensation. Some areas on the face can be more painful than others. In some individuals the HIFU lifting treatment can be delivered to those areas in stages, rather than delivering multiple lines adjacent to each other consecutively. Around the eyes, and over any bony prominence tend to be more intense, and the neck region seems to be the area that tolerates the HIFU treatment the best. Patients can be treated with lower energy levels and increased number of lines/pulses so the discomfort/pain level is much lower.

The second factor related to pain/discomfort during a HIFU Procedure is the type of skin being treated. Some patients experience more pain than others during the HIFU treatment. Patients with thicker skin or more dense areas will tolerate the treatment better than others. Pain medication can be very helpful for some patients and it is not uncommon to experience a “bruised” feeling afterward, but in most cases there is no visible effect on the skin as the target tissue is deeper.

Can HIFU replace a face lift?

HIFU is not a replacement for surgery, it is ideal for people who wish to uplift the face and neck but who are not ready or do not desire surgery. It is a non surgical uplift and can be combined with other non-surgical anti aging treatments to further enhance the results.

Free Consultations

Often a combination of treatments works best to address all signs of ageing. HIFU is the gold standard for lifting but does not treat pigment for example. HIFU can be used in conjunction with laser or IPL to address all aging concerns. A thorough consultation is always completed at least 24 hours before all treatments begin. All consultations and patch tests are free at Avalon Medispa.
